A session on a spike mat split by a sports massage
An acupressure mat (also known as a spike mat or Kuznetsov applicator) is a mat covered with hundreds of plastic rosettes tipped with small spikes. Under your body weight thousands of points press into the skin and tissues at once, which stimulates circulation and triggers the release of endorphins - the body answers the stimulus with natural pain relief and deep release. We work on a large XL mat (110 x 42 cm, 314 rosettes of 42 spikes each - over 15,000 points in total) together with a neck pillow. Here the mat is not a do-it-yourself device: the session is led by a therapist who sets the exposure time and, in the break between spells on the mat, performs a full sports massage. The combination works on two fronts: the mat warms the tissues and raises your pain threshold, which makes the deeper muscular work far easier to tolerate.
Consultation - we talk through your complaints and your experience with the mat, and check for contraindications.
First time on the mat - we start with a short exposure on your back, with the pillow under your neck; for the first minutes you feel a distinct prickling that gradually turns into warmth.
Breathing - the therapist guides you through calm, deepened breathing, which shortens the uncomfortable phase and deepens the release.
Sports massage - once you come off the mat, the therapist works the already warmed tissues with sports massage techniques: deeper muscle release, work on tendon attachments and trigger points.
Second exposure and winding down - a short, gentler return to the mat on a different area, followed by rest under a blanket.

For the first 2-3 minutes you feel a distinct prickling - that is a normal reaction. It then turns into spreading warmth and tingling. We start with a thin cotton layer between your skin and the spikes and remove it only when you are ready. The intensity is controlled by the exposure time and by how much of your body weight rests on the mat.
No. Manufacturers recommend a single exposure of 5-10 minutes for beginners up to 20-40 minutes for advanced users, and we stick to that. Our session is two spells on the mat separated by a sports massage and finished with rest - 90 minutes in total, of which you usually spend 20-40 minutes on the mat.
We do not use the mat with active skin conditions (psoriasis, eczema, fungal infections), fresh wounds, scars or burns, with clotting disorders and anticoagulant medication, with diabetes and sensory disorders, with cancer without a doctor's approval, during pregnancy, or under the age of 16.
Yes, but harmless ones - the skin is clearly reddened where it met the spikes. That redness is simply blood flowing to the area and it fades on its own within fifteen minutes to an hour.
